Why Your Engagement Session Should Feel Like a Date, Not a Photoshoot
If you've ever said...
"We're awkward in front of the camera."
"We don't know how to pose."
"Can we skip engagement photos?"
I promise—you are NOT alone.
One of the biggest misconceptions about engagement sessions is that they have to feel like a photoshoot.
I actually think they should feel like your favorite date.
The best engagement sessions aren't about spending two hours staring into the camera. They're about slowing down, exploring somewhere meaningful, grabbing a drink, taking a walk, laughing together, and documenting this incredibly exciting season before your wedding day.
When the experience feels natural, the photos will too.
Choose a Place That Already Means Something
One of my favorite recent engagement sessions wasn't planned around the most "Instagrammable" location.
It was planned around my couple.
They live on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, so instead of asking them to travel somewhere unfamiliar, we spent the evening where their life already happens.
We started with cocktails at one of their favorite neighborhood restaurants before wandering through Central Park as the sun began to set.
By the end of the evening...
It didn't feel like a photoshoot anymore.
It felt like a date.
And I think that's exactly why their gallery feels so genuine.
Why This Makes Your Wedding Day Better
This is honestly one of the biggest reasons I include engagement sessions in my Signature and Heirloom Collections.
By the time your wedding day arrives...
We already know each other.
You've experienced how I gently guide you instead of constantly posing you.
You know what feels natural.
I know what makes you laugh.
Portraits become something you actually look forward to instead of something you're nervous about.
Instead of meeting your photographer for the first time on one of the biggest days of your life...
You're seeing someone who already feels familiar.
It Doesn't Have to Be New York
This session happened in New York City because that's where my couple calls home.
Your story might look completely different.
Maybe that's:
A walk through Boston's North End
Cocktails in the Seaport
A beach evening on Cape Cod
Exploring Newport together
A favorite coffee shop
Your hometown
The location doesn't need to impress anyone.
It just needs to feel like you.
My Biggest Piece of Advice
Don't ask yourself...
"Where should we take engagement photos?"
Ask yourself...
"What do we actually love doing together?"
That's where we'll start.
Because years from now, I don't want you to simply remember what your engagement session looked like.
I want you to remember what it felt like.
Planning Your Own Engagement Session?
If you're looking for a Boston engagement photographer or Massachusetts wedding photographer who believes your engagement session should feel more like your favorite date than a photoshoot, I'd love to help you create something that's completely unique to your story.
Whether that means exploring Boston, Cape Cod, Newport, New York City, or somewhere that's meaningful to the two of you...
I'm already packing my bags. ✈️🤍
Love, Keleigh
